Difficulty burping

After feeding, your baby sometimes has trouble burping. This can cause discomfort: cramps, crying or restless sleep. As a parent, you often notice that your baby is restless, gets a bloated tummy or gives back milk. This can be stressful not only for your baby, but also for you as a parent. Osteopathy can provide relief in such cases in a gentle and safe way.

What happens when a baby does not burp properly?

Burping is an important way for a baby to get rid of swallowed air. While drinking – at the breast or from the bottle – air enters the stomach. If that air cannot be released, it gets stuck in the stomach. Your baby may then overstretch, tense up or cry. Some babies spit up a lot, while others hold their feed for a long time but are still visibly uncomfortable.

Not being able to burp properly may be related to:

  • tension around the diaphragm or abdominal organs;
  • decreased mobility of the neck or head;
  • a difficult birth;
  • reflux or overstimulation of the nervous system.

If your baby cries a lot after feeding, has difficulty falling asleep or stretches frequently, it makes sense to look beyond the burping itself.

How does an osteopath help with difficulty burping?

Osteopathy looks at the whole body. Everything in your baby’s body is connected: the tension in the abdomen, the mobility of the diaphragm, as well as how the nervous system functions and how the skull has developed. Through gentle, safe handling, I explore where the tension is in the baby’s body and help it to regain balance.

Treatment focuses on restoring mobility in the body. If the diaphragm can move freely and the nerve supply to the stomach and esophagus is optimal, burping will often become easier on its own. Many parents notice a difference after just one or two treatments: their baby burps more easily, is calmer after feeding and seems to feel more comfortable.

What can you expect during a consultation?

During the first consultation we take the time to look at your baby and listen to your story. I ask questions about the pregnancy, delivery, feeding and behavior of your baby. This is followed by a physical examination in which I feel the mobility of the belly, the diaphragm and the spine. The treatment is always done with calm, gentle techniques – specifically tailored to babies.

As an osteopath, I work without harsh manipulations. Your baby usually lies relaxed on the treatment table or in your arms. My goal is to activate your baby’s mobility and self-healing ability with minimal stimuli.
